Driveway services

A driveway built for cars, rain and everyday use

A driveway takes more weight than any other part of the garden. If the ground underneath is not dug out and compacted properly, it will sink, rut or crack. If the water has nowhere to go, it will pool by the door or run into the road. Youngs Landscaping digs out, lays and compacts a sub-base, plans the falls and drainage, and then lays the surface you choose. Because landscaping is the core of what we do, we can also sort the edges, borders, paths and front garden at the same time.

What we can help with

Block paving, resin and gravel

The main driveway surfaces, each built on the same careful groundwork.

01

Block paving

Block paving laid on a compacted base, with edging kerbs to hold it firm and patterns to suit the house.

02

Resin-bound driveways

A smooth, even resin surface laid over a suitable base, with clean edges to paths and lawns.

03

Gravel driveways

Gravel laid over a compacted sub-base, with edging to keep the stones in place.

04

Excavation and sub-base

Digging out the old surface and soil, then laying and compacting a solid sub-base.

05

Drainage

Falls, channel drains or soakaways so surface water runs away from the house and off the drive.

06

Edging and paths

Kerbs, edging and paths to the front door, finished to match the new drive.

Built around your garden

A driveway that fits the rest of the property

We look at parking needs, levels, drainage and how the drive meets the house, paths and front garden before we start, so it works as well as it looks. We also check where the water will go before any digging starts, because drainage is much harder to fix later. We work from near Ashford across Folkestone, Hythe, Canterbury, Dover, Maidstone, Sittingbourne, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and the Sussex border.

  • Honest advice on which surface suits your drive and budget
  • Old surfaces, soil and rubble taken away
  • Front garden planting, turf and fencing can be done in the same job
  • Patio materials can be matched to the drive for the back garden

Driveway questions

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

Not if the surface drains naturally, such as resin-bound, gravel or permeable block paving, or if the run-off goes to a lawn or soakaway rather than the road. We build to those rules so permission is not normally needed.

Block paving, resin or gravel?

Block paving is the most durable and the easiest to repair. Resin-bound gives a smooth, weed-free surface. Gravel is the cheapest and drains best but moves underfoot. The sub-base underneath is the same for all three, and that is where the money should go.

Can you arrange a dropped kerb?

A dropped kerb needs an application to Kent County Council Highways and an approved contractor for the kerb itself. We can point you to the process and build the driveway to line up with it.
